Mothers' Bay at Business Girls’ Club

MRS H. McKINNEY THE SPEAKER Yesterday's gathering of the Business Girls’ Club was a very special occasion, it being tho inauguration of a Alothers’ Day luncheon, which it is hoped to make an annual fixture. Mrs M. H. Oram presided over a record attendance and welcomed the mothers and other visitors, including Miss J. Thomson. Slio explained that the gathering had arisen out of a happy suggestion made at tho annual meeting, and had been arranged for the nearest luncheon day to the world-wide commemoration of Mothers’ Day. Tho mothers had always shown kindly interest in the activities of tho club and yesterday’s function gave thorn an insight into a particular activity. The speaker for the day, who was introduced by Airs Oram, was Airs 11. McKinney, of Auckland, who gavo some most interesting impressions . of her visit to tho East. In the short time at her disposal Mrs AlcKinney gave a vivid description of tho colourful panorama that opened lip for tho visit to Hong-Koug and her impressions of tho inhabitants and their customs. Every day seemed a festive day. She went on to describe the many interesting features of Shanghai with its wealth of treasures on the one hand and’ poverty and suffering on the other. A. first ride in a rickshaw was a thrilling experience, she said, but the novelty soon wore off. Everywhere the scene was animated and picturesque, although tho mixture of the ugly with the beautiful' was incomprehensible to the Western mind. Airs Oram returned thanks to Airs AlcKinney and voiced the hope that sho would continue her talk at some future date.

Special pleasure, was expressed in the presence of Airs F. Christian, founder of the club, and Airs Schaw and her small daughter. Afcmbers wore reminded of the meeting on Tuesday night to make white roses for Alothers’ Day. An apology for absence was received from Mrs A. E. Alansford, the patroness.
