From Our Own Correspondent. Sports Meeting, The third annual Easter meeting of the Shannon Sports Club was as popular as ever and even more successful. There was a large number of entries and the varied programme gave a line entertainment for the largo crowd which attended. Mr. A. Ayres, of Dannevirke, judge of the horse events, commented very favourably on the performances and geueral arrangements. The Highland dancing events were particularly popular and attracted competitors from Palmerston North, Wellington, Hastings and Napier. Mr. T. Glen, of Peilding, was judge of this section and his comments were also favourable. It was his opinion that this section ■would increase in importance and the Shannon Easter meeting would become recognised as an important fixture by dancers in increasing numbers. Other Events. Sheaf tossing won by Wm. Hunter, of Oroua Downs. Shetland pony competition won by li. Gardner, of 1-limatangi. W'eight-guessing.—Lamb, 711bs: A. Coates 71j, J. W. Newton 70J. Pig, USSlbs: N. Rogers, A. Craig, P. Peach and B. Ventry-Sinith llSjlbs, C. Brown liOlbs. The Palmerston North Free Ambulance was in attendance, and their services were required in Uio case of I. Williams, whose mount, Top Rail, fell at the third hurdle in tho maiden jump, and R. Blenkhorn, whose mount, Taneka, fell at the third hurdle in tho open hunters’ competition. The Women’s Bivision of the Farmers’ Union carried out catering arrangements. in the evening a dance was held and an enjoyable time was spent by all. A professional orchestra was in attendant*.:, and an enjoyable supper was provided. The committee of the sports club lias just been presented with a gold cup by Mr. P. S. Easton, of Poxton, and uo doubt this trophy will be competed for ' on future occasions. Golf. The first match for the Hamilton Cup was played at Shannon between Poxton and a local team, the results being as follows, Shannon players being mentioned first: Wilson beat Bryant; C. Stern beat Gavin;. J. Mahey beat Jas. Purcell; H. Stern beat Baird; Morgan beat L. Saywell; H. Mahey beat J. Purcell; Pope beat Robinson; McLean beat Thomas; Bovls halved with C. W. Pederson; Mead beat Collins; Easton beat B. Pederson; Rawlinson beat Turner. Shannon 135, Poxton 5. The matches for the trophy are played on handicap. The visitors were entertained by tho club at afternoon tea. Borough Council.
