RACING CLUBS SHOULD CATER FOR THREE-YEAR-OLDS

A noticeable fcaturo of tho programmes issued by tno majority of racing clubs is tho fact that two-year-olds are well 'catered for. Whether this is in tho best interests of the two-year-olds or racing generally is another question for it is held by a number of men well qualified to speak, that two-year-olds should not be raced. On most programmes, however, there arc races for youngsters but except for tho clubs which go for classic races, events for three-year-olds are conspicuous by their absence.

Worthy of Consideration. The weathor was particularly bad at Marten on Saturday and at ono stage of the proceedings there was continuous and heavy rain. Little consideration was shown for the jockeys, however, who, once they had paraded, were required to remain out in the rain until the race had been run. Prior to and during the running of the Crofton Hack Cup the rain was coining down in shyets. During the preliminaries and for some time afterwards the boys were permitted to wear overcoats, but these could not have been sufficient to keep them dry, let alone warm, and a few minutes before the face was supposed to bo run those sopping coats had to be discarded. Then, to make matters worse, there was a false start and a long delay before the' held was finally despatched on its journey. Hi even jockeys, clad in very thin clothing, word out in the ram for tlie best part of an hour and no less than six of these were out again for the next race after only a few minutes under shelter. Jockeys have to be hardy to keep going in their chosen profession but on a day like Saturday they should have returned to shelter after doing their preliminaries.

WINNING RIDER THROWN FALL AFTER PASSING POST There was an unusual occurrence at Avondale on Saturday, when tile two-year-old Tonnerre lost his rider shortly after passing the post a winner in the Oakley Handicap. Tonnerre shied and slipped at the crossing on the track about 50 yards up the track and his jockey, R. Horne, was thrown heavily. Tonuerrc was quickly caught and was remounted by Horne, who rode back to the enclosuro to weigh in. Horne was severely shaken and bruised.
