Motoring a Clean Man’s Job
The modem motorist is a comparatively pampered person, whether his car be large or small, costly or cheap. Driving has become largely automatic, thanks to easy gear change system, electric traffic indicators and such like, while tyres arc notv so long-lived that they arc seldom responsible for a stop on tho road. And when “jacking” has to be resorted to, it is no longer the incredibly dirty operation of a few years ago, for the built-in jack is now extensively standardised. Altogether, it is seldom necessary for tho motorist of to-day to soil his hands; even lubricating oil and grease cun bo obtained in clean collapsible lead tubes of the type long familar in connection with such every-day essentials as shaving soap and tooth paste.
Probably few pcoplo realise liow much skill and ingenuity have gono into the production of this type of container. Greenwood and Batloy, Ltd., of Leeds, manufacture a range of four machines to produce these tubes, and it is worth recounting the process involved. I’irsty, the metal dump is blanked from a strip of metal'; the clump is then placed in a special press and extruded in a punch in the form of a tube, open at one end and closed at the other by a nipple. The latter is then screwed, and the cap is formed on another machine. The finished tube is then printed and is ready for filling.
