Just before 7 o'clock last evening a chimney lire in Cuba street proved to bo of sufficient dimensions to warrant the attention of the Fire Brigade. <s> <S> <S> «> An open drain in Botanical road west is said to be a clanger to children and pedestrians at night. The City Council recognises the menace and has decided to cousidor laying pipes when the estimates ' are being framed next month. <& <s> $ ® A request from residents of Wood street to have the roadway tar-sealed, was received by tho City Council last night and referred to tho incoming council. A similar request from 'Boundary road residents was likewise deferred.
<s> <S> <s> <S> As they did not know very much about the proposal to create a new highway between Plinmerton and Paekakariki to cut out the hill climb, the Palmerston North City Council last evening referred to the incoming council the question as to whether the move should be supported or not. <S> O <S> * Citizens —and perhaps police constables—realising that daylight saving had only ceased a day previously, tried not to notice cyclists ‘ ‘ without "gilts after sundown” yesterday. There were many caught by darkness about 5.30 o’clock, but there were few who became law-abiding people and walked the distance home <&«•<s><s•
The City Council was informed last evening that there is no provision for the recording of absentee votes in the coming municipal elections. As regards voting by declaration, this applied only to persons who had been omitted from tho roll by printer’s or clerical error and anyone voting by declaration who was not entitled to do so, was liable to a fine of £SO. <s> <s> <s> <s>
At thcii luncheon yesterday, Palmerston North ltotarians had the pleasure of an address by Or. W. M. Smith, who discussed President Roosevelt and his effort to combat chaos in the United States of Am«rica. Thanks to tnc speaker were voiced by Rotarian J. Hubbard and carried with enthusiasm. Visitors welcomed were: Messrs. J. Bower (Apia, Samoa), J. C. Young, W. A. Boniface, M. 11. Oram (Palmerston North).
•$> <S> <s> <S> At a meeting of business men of the city held yesterday afternoon it was decided to resuscitate the Citizens’ Show Committee, which operated in the interests of Mana.wafu A. and P. Association shows a few years ago. Mr. A. Hopwood, who presided, was deputed with two other members of the meeting to interview business men with the object of calling another meeting to further the activities of the committee.
