Unemployment Taxation
Elsewhere in this issue appears an intimation by the Unemployment Board that on May 1 the usual quarterly instalment of the general unemployment levy will become due, and that ou the same date will also fall due tho first instalment of the emergency unemployment charge of .1 Od in tho £ on income other than salary or wages derived during the year ended March 31, 1935. All male persons, including natives, of 20 years of age or over (except those wholly exempt from payment of the general unemployment levy) are required in May each year to furnish declarations of income other than salary or wages. If no such income is derived a “nil” declaration is required. A woman whose income other than salary or wages exceeds £SO, must also furnish a declaration in respect of her income. This applies also to, native women.
Full information and declaration forms are obtainable at all Moneyorder Offices, and payment of the emergency unemployment charge should be made at a local post office or to the Commissioner of Unemployment, Taxation Branch, Invicta House, Wellington, C.l. It is pointed out that persons who fail to furnish declarations as and when required render themselves liable on summary conviction to a fine of £SO. A penalty equal to 10 per cent, of the amount of tax due will be added to any instalment uot paid within one month of the due'date.
The Unemployment Board draws attention to the fact that in many instances unemployment-relief stamps denoting payment of wages tax are not being cancelled in the prescribed manner, and to protect - themselves, employers should see that all such stamps are effectively cancelled by a signature or initials and the date of payment.
