South Island Ride Meeting

W. H. WEST LEADING FOR CHAMPIONSHIP BELT 4' . or Press Association. BLENHEIM, Last Night. The South Island rifle championships opened on Vernon range to-day. The weather conditions were perfect until about 11 a.m., when a strong nor’wester blew up, making conditions so difficult that not a single possible was registered, though W. H. West won the Midfield Aggregate, for the best performance over the 300, 500 and 600 yards ranges, and is also leading the field for the South Island championship belt and gold medal with an aggregate of ISO. .1. McCallum, a club-mate of West, is second with I SI, followed by C. A. Hadfieid (president of the Marlborough Rifle Association), N. Manson (Nelson) and J. H. Jones (Culverden), each with 180.

Among the visiting marksmen are: T. Goodall, A. H. O’Donnell, H. G. Day (all of Wellington), Serg t.-Major Franks, N. hfarsdon, W. R. Martin (all of Nelson), Sergt.-Major R. L. Jordan, N. Perkins (Westport), W. S. G. Sutherland (Gowan Bridge), J. H. Hones and J. S. W. Earl (Culverden). S. A. Barnett (Nelson), last year’s belt winner, is not present.
