“Empire” Broadcasts From Berlin
SERVICE FOR OVERSEAS LISTENERS United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Tuesday, 7 p.m. LONDON, April «. Tho Daily Telegraph says that. Germany has made a remarkable move relating to her shortwave “Empire” broadcasts from Berlin. She has scut advance programmes and a questionnaire concerning reception and comments on the items to the British Dominions. The German service in many respects resembles the British Broadcasting Corporation’s programmes from Daventry. Berlin sends out shortwave broadcasts for 15 to 16 hours daily on various wavelengths. For tho first zone, embracing Bombay, Batavia, Sydney and Auckland, the English language is used; for tho second zone, the Far East. Dutch is used; for the third zone, Africa, English is used; for the fourth zone, South America, Spanish and Portuguese are used; while for the fifth zone, North America, English is used. Officially the programmes are intended for “the 30,000,000 Germans living abroad,” but semi-official documents admit that the service is intended as propaganda for tho homeland.
