K. Ross, formerly attached to the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North, has been transferred to Wellington. Mr. R. M. Tho engineer stated that one of the council’s trucks had been so well eared for by its driver, that it had been kept on the road for 12 years and was stiil going strong. ■s> <S> <s> <s> The returns of the Supreme Court at Palmerston North for the quarter ended on March 31 show that there were nine trial's by the judge and four by jury. Seven decrees absolute in divorce were sealed and eight petitions dismissed or withdrawn. Probates and letters of administration scaled numbered 55. There were 149 chattels securities and 17 satisfactions filed. Six applications were made to conduct sales by mortgagees through the registrar. Pees collected amounted to £537 17s. In all £2031 15s was claimed in civil cases, and £I9SG ISs recovered.

If proof were needed that Voitre knew what he was talking about it is to bo found in the story of “Billy’' Broughton’s night journey to fulfil riding engagements at Pahiatua yesterday. On Monday Broughton was riding at t'ho Dargavillo meeting and in the last race but one ho piloted Tybalt to victory. Then he was. faced with the task of travelling over 530 miles to be present at the Pahiatua meeting, where horses starting in the first race were required to parade at 11 a.m. Broughton, with a companion, left Dargavilie at 5 p.m. by car, and they took it in turns to drive. : Th*y had a meal in Auckland and a cup of tea in Te Kuiti, and they drove on through the night, arriving in Palmerston North —502 miles from Dargavilie—l6A hours after leaving Dargavilie. Broughton was at his home long enough to have a bath and to get a change of clothing, but’ without waiting for even a cup of tea he continued his journey to Palliatua, where he had the satisfaction of adding yet another winner to his total which is now four ahead of that of L. •X. Ellis.
