Cuddle's Pahiatua Cup Win was Good

Three-Horse Open Seven Won by True Shaft

Haut Monde had to Gallop in Nursery Handicap

Day of Interesting Racing

Tlie Pahiatua Racing Club’s annual meeting opened yesterday in delightful weather and enthusiasts, who attended in large numbers, were treated to' a day of particularly interesting racing. The course was in magnificent order and with its very long straight it provided an excellent convincing ground and in the majority of cases the issue was still in doubt until the horses had almost reached the post. The totalisator investments amounted to £6163 10/- as compared with £4393 10/- on the first day last year, and the increase—£l77o—would have been well over the two thousand mark but for the three-horse race with which the day concluded. Vinco Beats Happy Hunting. There were 14 starters in the Maiden race, the best backed being Count AVillonyx, Vinco, Chaste and Happy Hunting. Collision and Genial wore slow to begin and Happy Hunting took up the running from l’opette, Bonnie Quex, Snowball, British' Empire, Count Willonyx and Vinco. AVithin a couple of furlongs Snowball had poined Happy Hunting in the van, while Vinco and Chaste had improved their positions. There was, not much alteration in the order as they crossed the' top- and the leaders into the .■ straight were Happy, Hunting and Popette, from Snowball, then A’inc-o, Bonnie Quex, Chasto and Eka Tere. At the. distance Happy Hunting was in charge but A7iueo was challenging and Count AVillonyx was' coming through. In a good finish Vinco had to produce his best to beat Happy Hunting by a long nock. Count Willonyx was less than a length away from the second horse, and there was a gap of four lengths to Chaste, ahead of Collision, Snowball, Popette. Bonnie Quex and Eka Tere. Awapuni’s Higliweiglit. In' the Higliweiglit Awapuni-trained horses filled the places, Taumau and The Drone returning the dividends, the latter’s being quite a good one for second. Cheerful Day and Grand Blow were stow to begin, the early pace being set by Royal Record who led out of the straight followed by Park Acre, Swift and' Sure, Flamingo, The Drone. Taumau and Sir Spear. The pace was on and they had not gone far before the field was running in two divisions, the leading bunch consisting of Royal Record and Swift and Sure, Park Acre, The Drono and Flamingo. Taumau was at the head of the others. Taumau began to move up at the far turn and the, order into the straight was Royal Re cord and Swift and Sure, then Park Acre, The Drone, Taumau, Flamingo and Sir Spear. There wore four or five in line at the distance but Taumau thon took charge and he won nicely by over two lengths from The Drone with Park Acre third, just in front of Flamingo. Then came Cheerful Day and Sir Spear. Easy for Cuddle—Cup Was a slow-run Race. Cuddle was backed down to a short price for the Cup winch proved the best of good things for her. Bold Jim was the leader for about seven furlongs and there was not much pace on until Eminent set it alight. Reed, however, always had Cuddle within striking distance and as soon as heads were turned for home, he quickly gathered the leaders and wont on to win easily by three lengths, Cuddle galloping very sweetly over the last bit. The early leader was Cuddle from La Poupee and Bold Jim, but no one seemed anxious to make the pace. Then Boid Jim went to the front and he led into the back followed by La Poupee, Cuddle, Vertigern, who had gone forward, AVaiton Park and Eminent. The last named made a quick run at the half and he had the fence to lead across the top, being followed into the straight by Bold Jim and La Poupee, then Cuddle. The favourite then put tho issue beyond doubt with a brilliant run.and she wob by a decisive margin. ;There was a good go for second.; lor Walton Park, who. had ' been last to ;tura for. home,, ; cam.e..with-a date.run to; beat Eminent by a head. Bold Jim was fourth followed by La-Poupee; Raparahara Beats Leprechaun.

Leprechaun was favourite for the Konini Hack but he was beaten into second place by Eaparahara, who finished particularly well. Raparahaxa was first to show out but before they had gone a furlong Debut had charge followed by Blygain, Vonia Parle and Bonnie Song, Leprechaun and Eapara-
