Condition of General Decay

OROUA RIVER BRIDGE AT KOPANE. APPROACH TO BE IMPROVED. “Tho bridge is in such a state of general decay that it would not bo economical to undertake structural repairs,” said Mr. H. V. Bond (county engineer) in reporting on the condition of the Oroua river bridge at Kopane to yesterday’s meeting of tho Manawatu County Council. “If this structure is not to bo subject to load restriction I would recommend that an early opportunity be taken to meet the Ivairanga County Council and tho Main Highways Board with a view of arranging for the construction of a new bridge. Continuing, Mr. Bond said: “The approach on the Manawatu side is on a grade of 1 in 24 and is only 16 feet wide on the road surface. The vision is poor and tho approach too narrow. To build up and widen the approach to make it safe.for passing traffic I estimate tho cost would bo £l2O, the Highway Board’s subsidy on a basis of £3 to £.l would be £9O and the Ivairanga County Council and this council would pay equal shares of £ls each. Tho approach on the Ivairanga side is not so dangerous and could be left in the meantime.’ ’ “I am perfectly satisfied that the bridge has lived its life,' ’ said the chairman (Cr. W. E. Barber). Councillors generally were satifled that, meanwhile, the steps outlined by the engineer to have* the approach attended to, should be taken and this ! was agreed to.
