Good Fields Engaged at Pahiatua

POPULAR ANNUAL FIXTURE OPENS TO-DAY. FIRST RACE AT 11.30. The Pahiatua Racing Club’s popular annual meeting opens today and will be concluded to-mor-row. The course, which has been much improved since last year, is reported to be in first-class order, and the long straight should give form horses every chance of proving their real capabilities. Excellent fields have been carded for to-day’s events and the racing, which will give a line on Easter prospects, should be full of interest. The betting will be conducted with the single-pool and the dividends will bo assessed on the 75-25 basis. The first race is timed to start at 11.30 a.m. and the concluding event about 4.20 p.m.

There are no less than 16 acceptors for the Maiden Race, which will open the day’s proceedings, and although Count Willonyx, Collision and Eka Tero have placed performances to their credit, the majority of horses engaged will have to be taken on trust.' The betting may point to Eka Tere, Count Willonyx and Vinco. A dozen horses have been accepted for the B-allancc Highweight- and a great race should result. Sir Spear, Grand Blow, Flamingo, Royal Record and Swift and Surs will all have friends, but when the machine has closed it may be found that the punters have gone for Grand Blow, Flamingo and Sir Spear. Cuddle has pride of place in the Cup, but 9.9 should not stop her. Walton Park was out at Manawatu and he will be all the better for the race and ho may be preferred to the top-weight. Eminent is in with a handy weight and he should be capable of taking a part in the finish. Brambletorn is a good sort when fib, but ho has no recent form to recommend his chances. La Poupec, Bold Jim and Vertigern are the lightweights and though the winner may come from this division, most support may be forthcoming for Walton Park and Eminent. In the Konini Hack there is material for an exciting race and the betting may point to Debut, Leprechaun and Passion Flower. -

The Woodvifle-trained youngster, Haut Monde, may be expected to dominate the betting in the Nursery Handicap. His most dangerous opponents may be Boomerang and Romp Along. Quite a good class lot are engaged in the Hamua Hack and the issue appears very open. Count Willonyx claims a prior engagement, but each and every other acceptor must be conceded a chance. Three that amy make most appeal, however, arc Darecourt, Royal Dash and Big Dook. The Makuri Hack field may be reduced before starting time. Warvane, Leprechaun (if reserved) and Hunting Bag may be entrusted with most support. • The Eketahuna Handicap over seven furlongs will conclude the day’s racing and although there is a possibility of a surprise, receut form suggests that the betting will point to Cottesmore, Cawbeen and Lady Spy.

THE ACCEPTANCES.
