Operations of Major Oil Companies
“ NOTHING- INIMICAL TO COUNTRY ”
United Press Association.—By Elcctrio Telegraph.—Copyrigh t. Received Monday, 8.50 p.m. SYDNEY, April 8.
The Royal Commission which inquired into petrol prices and the operations of distributing companies some time ago made its report available to-day. The majority report declares that there is no evidence that policies promulgated between the major oil companies of Australia had achieved any condition of affairs inimical to tho country. They offended no accepted business practice; on the contrary, their aim was to achieve orderly marketing, prevent the secret cutting of prices and seek closer co-operation between tho companies in order to overcome extravagance in distribution costs and tho granting of extravagant credit. A minority report, prepared by the chairman (Mr. IS. E. Lamb, K.C.) stated that, during part of the period investigated, there was a combination between the Shell, Vacuum, Atlantic Union and Texas Companies with the object of preventing price-cutting among themselves, suppression of competition and stifling competition from outside. Mr. Lamb expressed tho opinion that the total gain to the Australian consumer during tho petrol war in 1933 was probnbly £3,000,000.
