Longest Irrigation Canal in Australia
HUME WEIR AND RIVERINA United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. SYDNEY, April 7. The Premier, Mr. B. S. Stevens, yesterday' turned the first sod of tho Mulwala irrigation canal in the Southern ltivorina district, which, when completed, will be 100 miles long, the longest in Australia. To it will be connected 550 miles of subsidiary channels. The cost of the whole work will be considerably more than £1,000,000 and it will provide work for eight years for more than 1000 men. The canal links up with the Hume Weir and the waters will irrigate over 2,000,000 acres of fertile land between Berrigan and Balranald, also the whole of the DeniJiquin district.
The Premier stated that the cost of the Hume Weir had been £5,250,000, divided between New South AVales and Victoria.
