Printing Trade Dispute
STATEMENT BY MINISTER Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. The following statement bearing on the printing trade dispute was issued to-night by the Minister of Labour (Hon. A, Hamilton): “In regard to the stoppago of work in the printing industry in AVellington, it is pointed out that Section 123 (1) of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, 1925, provides that, when a strike takes place in any industry, every worker who is or becomes a party to the strike and who is at the commencement of the strike bound by any award or industrial agreement affecting that industry, shall bo liable to a penalty not exceeding £lO. “Section 124 (1) of the same Act provides that every person who incites, instigates, aids or abets an unlawful strike or the continuance of any such strike, or who incites, instigates or assists any person to become a party to any such strike, is liable, if a worker, to a penalty not exceeding £lO, and if an industrial union, industrial association, trade union, employer, or any person other than a worker, to a penalty not exceeding £2OO. When a strike takes place and the majority of the members of any industrial union or industrial association are at any time . parties to tho strike, the said union or association is deemed to have instigated tho strike.
‘•The term ‘unlawful strike’ used above means a strike of any workers who are bound at tko commencement of the strike by any award or industrial agreement affecting the industry in which the strike arises. The workers concerned in the present disturbance are bound by an award of the Court of Arbitration and the provisions quoted above are, therefore, applicable. ”
Position Unchanged
Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, 'March 20. The position in the printing dispute is still unchanged. Napier Objects to Drastic Action NAPIER, March 20. Members of the Typographical Union met this morning to consider a demand from Wellington to strike. The following resolution was carried and the men resumed work:—"That this Napier branch of the Wellington Printing and Belated Trades Union objects tt the drastic action of the Wellington branch and states that more peaceful methods are advisable in the settlement -of any dispuite. ’>
