BUSINESS AT MEETING At Monday night’s meeting'of the Palmerston North City Council, the on* ginccr (Mr J. 11. Hughes) reported that in accordance Avith instructions the well borers who put down the original artesian well were asked to take on the work of cleaning out the bore. This work was commenced on January 31, but after a week’s operation there Avas no increase in tho flow. Ho then instructed the firm to procure a short piece of piping and drivo tho well on an ( additional 4ft Dim, so that the bottom of this well would coincide with the bottom of No. 2 well. After driving approximately 3ft the flow gradually commenced to increase and driving became much easier. On coupling up the well again to the reservoir, and after tests of tho flow were carried out, it was found that the discharge was 261 gallons per minute as against 113 gallons per minute, an inereaso of 130 per cent, on the reading taken December 7, 1934. The combined flow of the two wells is 30240 gallons per hour. Tarred Bonds Wanted A request by Oollego Street school committee to have tho grass in front of the infant school removed and the surface tar-sealed, was referred to the engineer for a report as to tho cost. A petition from ratepayers, Milverton Avenue, requesting tho tar-scaling of tho roadway, was referred to the estimates. Ratepayers, Heretauuga street, forwarded a petition requesting tho tarsealing of tho street from Featherstone street to the hospital entrance, and it w r as decided that tho request bo referred to tho estimates. Standing Down Mornings 'A petition signed by several employees in the city engineer’s department in reference to standing down on Saturday mornings and requesting that the half day be now restored, was held over and the engineer was requested to report in regard to tho increased expen-' dituro necessary in the event of tho request being acceded to. Footpath Featherstone Street With reference to the request from the Takaro Bowling Club that a footpath bo formed from the Hawaii stream to their entrance, it was decided that a path 6 feet in width bo constructed, metalled, tarred and sanded at an estimated cost of £3l 17s, and that tho Kawau bridge bo widened for an additional width of 6ft, at an estimated cost of £65. Petrol Supplies Tho Council received a deputation from the Associated Motorists’ Petrol Company, Ltd., the request being that tho Council should purchase the whole of its benzinQ requirements from the company. Reasons w ero advanced for such special consideration by the speaker, Mr L. A. Edwards. Cr. Free presented a motion rescinding a minuto on tho Council’s books that tho various companies bo given turn and turn about each month. He said tho changing of petrol each month did not make for good running. To .get tho best out of such a policy, carburettor adjustments should bo made. Cr.
Free also spoke in favour of giving all business to Ike Associated Motorists’ Company. Cr. J. Hodgens seconded the motion. Tho Mayor pointed out that the company had had a fair run over 12 months to tho tune of something over £3OOO. The motion was lost by 6 votes to 4. Request From Printers Mr C. F. Spooner headed a deputation of master printers protesting against portions of the Couucil’s printing work going out of tho city. The Mayor said that only £SO worth of printing had been sent out of the city by the Council in the last 10 or 12 months, and that was only a small percentage of the total amount spent, by the Council on printing. A decision Avas deferred until the Avorks committee could give it consideration.
