Obituary
MR ALEX MATHESON There passed away on Saturday afternoon after a .short illness a very highly esteemed resident of Tiakitahunn, in the person of Mr Alex Matheson, in his 76th year. He was born on the Isle of Sky, and came to New Zealand at an early ago with his parents, who engaged in farming pursuits in Otago. Some years later the family shifted to these parts, when Mr Matheson took up the teaching profession. He took charge of the local school two years after it had been opened. After teaching a few years he engaged in farming duties till he retired sonic ten years ago. His interest in school affairs never flagged and he served a long term on the committee of the Tiakitahuua School. In the Great War he interested himself in the welfare of the returned soldiers and up to the time of his decease ho occupied a seat on the patriotic society. He was also a justice of the peace for a number of years. When the local hall was built he rendered great assistance on the committee, being its first chairman, and he had been connected with the affairs of the hall up to the present time. In church matters he was very enthusiastic. It is on record that ho had been a worker in this connection for at least 30 years, lie had carried out the duties of treasurer to the local committee of management for a long term. In the passing of Mr Mathcson the district has suffered a severe loss. He was a man of kindly disposition, of tactful nature and esteemed by all with whom ho came in contact. He was always willing to assist in any movement for the welfare of the district and his advice on any matter of importance was keenly sought ■. after and much valued. There are left to mourn their loss three brothers —Mr Ronald Mathcson, North Auckland; Mr Dugald Mathcson, Tauranga; Mr Peter Mathcson, West Indies —and live sisters —Mrs Cowan, of Invercargill; Mrs Ferguson, of Auckland; Mrs Rogers, of New Plymouth, and the Misses Flora and Bessie Mathcson, of Tiakitahuna. There are also a number of nephews and nieces. Tho sympathy of the whole district is extended to tho bereaved ones.
