The anti-administration revolt in the Senate was at least temporarily broken to-day when the amendment guaranteeing prevailing Wages for relief work was defeated by 50 votes to 3S and a compromise approved by S 3 to 2. With this controversy thus removed, the conservatives have mobilised their strength in an attempt to reduce the appropriation from the 3,850,000,000 dollars requested by the President, but they are conceded little chance of success.
