Debating Society's Meeting

VIEWS ABLY EXPRESSED The Palmerston North Literary and Debating Society held their weekly meeting on Friday night, there being in attendance 35 members. The first part of the evening was devoted to a "Mock Election” campaign. Members standing for Parliament put forward many interesting and valuable ideas. Mr. F. G. Opie, as adjudicator, judged Mr. Watson to be tho candidate who made tho greatest impression on tho electors. Tho debate for tho evening was then contested, tho subject being ‘‘That Secondary Industries in New Zealand should bo developed.” Marks were awarded as follow: — Affirmative: Mr. McFarland 77, Mr. Grimshaw 77, Mr. Tapp 63, reply (Mr. Grimshaw) 17; total 234. Negative: Mr. McDavitt S 3, Mr. Philpott 86, Mr. Toon 70, reply (Mr. McDavitt) 17; total 256. After the speeches, the debate was thrown open for discussion, many interesting views being heard. Mr. F. G. Opie then gave valuable criticism and helpful advice, declaring the negative to be the successful party. Tho trophy for tho best effort of tho evening was awarded to Mr. Pliilpott, junr. The meeting place for the following week will be advertised in both papers next Friday. Tho meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to Mr Opie,
