India’s most sensational trial ended with death sentences ioi Benoyendra Pandey and Dr. Taranath Bhattacharya, who were convicted of conspiring the murder of Amarcndra 1 andey, a step-brother of Benoyendra, by the injection of deadly germs. Dr. Dhar and Dr. Sivapada Bhattasharya were similarly charged. Amarendra Pandey was a Avealthy owner of property which *his step-brother will inherit. The prosecutor alleged that the murder was plotted with diabolical ingenuity. Benoyendra Pandey aided by his doctor friends, unsuccessfully attempted to kill .Amarendra by smearing tetanus germs inside his spectacles. The prosecutor alleged that Dr. Taranath Bhattacharya aided Dr. .Sivapada. They then obtained plague baecili from a hospital at Bombay and the germs wereinjected by a pinprick while Amarendra was going home m a, crowd.' Amarendra died and Di. .Sivapada allegedly issued a false certificate permitting cremation. The Crown suggested that the germs were first tried out on rats and guineapigs.
