Bulls
From Our Own Correspondent. Town Board Affairs.
The Bulls Town Board held their monthly meeting on Thursday night, there being present the chairman (Cmr. J. E. Walker) and Cmrs. C. H. Edwards, A. W. Amon, J. J. Mansell, L. A. Holland and D. Lundy. The foreman reported that the usual maintenance work had been carried out, and improvements and additions to the camping facilities put in hand, while the cricket ground had also been attended to. A. E.. Beavis wrote asking the board to use every effort to prevent contractors from removing gravel from tho river-bed adjacent to the Bulls bridge, pointing out that the removal of same jeopardised the safety of the protection works. It was stated that the county council had put in a stock road to the river, and that the board therefore had no connection with same.—Letter received. Buils-Ohakea Sports Club applied for permission to use the recreation ground on March 7 and authority to charge admission for same.—Granted. The Parewanui School Committee also applied for permission to use the recreation ground for their annual picnic on February 22.—Granted. More About Hall Charges.
The charges for letting the town hall have repeatedly formed the basis of differences of opinion among the board members, and Cmr. Edwards started the subject off afresh when he intimated that he had been asked to obtain a reduction of the 15s charge imposed for political meetings. He stated that the Labour Party intended holding several such meetings, and they could obtain other halls for os, and unless the present charge was brought down it seemed unlikely that they would take the hall. He thought the charge seemed a little too high for this purpose.
Cmr. Lundy: That Just depends on whom you support. Cmrs. Amon and Mansell botli agreed that it wolud be better to reduce the fee rather than lose business, the latter pointing out a striking anomaly in the charge schedule and remarking that the charges were overdue for revision. Cmr. Holland was opposed to any reduction, and remarked that political meetings were of no benefit to tho town and therefore their convenors should pay the full price.
After further discussion a motion moved by Cmr. Amon and seconded by Cmr. Edwards, was passed, allowing- for a reduction to 10s without the use of extras. When the vote ivas taken, Cmr. Holland was the only dissentient. Cyclists, Beware!
Cmr. Holland brought up the question of cycling on footpaths. He thought that now the roads were tar-sealed, cyclists had no oxcuse for using the footpaths. Other commissioners concurred, and a resolution was passed asking the police and the foreman to take action against offenders. The schoolmaster is to be Writtten to asking him to give the school children a warning. The works committee for the month will be Cmrs. Lundy, Mansell and Holland. Evening Sports. Bulls and Marton athletes were in good form for the second series of races run in the Chainey Cup series. Results.—Half mile cycle handicap: first heat: E. Gibbs (60) 1, I/, Bromley (60) 2, J. Bulls experienced a fairly heavy downpour of rain on Thursday night, which was heralded by violent thunderstorms and long flashes of lightning. Last week’s flood In the Rangitikei was particularly annoying, for besides hearing evidence that the country up north was experiencing rain, it stopped the temporary supplies of residents, who were unable to use the muddy water of the stream.
