FEILDING .SUCCEEDS; COLYTON

Siovers and Biss took up the bowling attack against tho Service reply, McLeod and Hart opening. Tho field was never more keen, and beforo tho score opened McLeod was taken by Biss off his bowling partner. Hart at 3 lost his bails to Sievers and Barltrop was promptly stumped by Fitzpatrick off Biss for a “duck.” Blamires and Burgess were likely to prove dangerous, but Sievers decided the fate of the latter at G with a ball that captured his middle stump. In double figures and out for runs, Blamires had Wild, Ferguson and Green as shortlived partners, and was promising well until ho skied ono off Sievers which Donaldson took with the bowler backing him up. Whitehead sprang a surprise and commenced to worry the field with his deliberate scoring, but ho lacked a partner when Drew lifted his bat to allow 11. Dewo to disturb tho middle stump. Dismissed for 74 well before time,. Service wero Go runs short, and Feilding thus claimed a handsomo win to compensate for their recent surprising defeat by Colyton. The following are the details:—

MISSES

The two senior cricket contests in Feilding on Saturday afternoon witnessed a keenness on the part of the two teams in the lead to pull off threepoint victories. Feilding were successful in this respect against Public Service but Colyton failed against Old Boys and had to rest content with a two-point result in their favour. Replying to the score of 138 provided by Colyton Old Boys, who had lost Brock, J. Dewo and Finlay -when rain stopped the play on the previous Saturday, resumed with. J. Connell and Penney at the crease. This partnership promised well but shortly after getting into double fingers Connell lost his wicket to Power and Whitehead joined Penney who was playing steadily. This pair helped the score along until a misunderstanding saw Whitehead run out at 10. Penney provided 40 before his bails were scattered by M. Waldin and with extras at 18 the innings closed for 10G, just 32 short of their opponents.. Fitzherbert, whose bowling is over difficult and doubtful, captured G wickets for IS runs. With high hopes Colyton set about the business of knocking up runs rapidly and their- achievement of this objective is to bo commended. In quick time they had 120 on the telegraph for the loss of four wickets, and at this stage Skipper Power decided to declare and go for a three-point win. The Waldin brothers opened tho strike and handled the bowling in a happy vein until Maurice failed to cover Finlay at 16. Gibson joined A. Waldin and tho score mounted. His wicket fell at 12 and Hocken carried on tho partnership with AValdin who, at 51, was caught by Connell off Finlay. Hockcn made 20 and Power 5 not out.

Old Boys were in better form for the reply to this challenge of the country cloven and although the fall of their first two wickets, Whisker and Poole, was disturbing, causing Colyton to rejoice, J. Dewo and d. Connell got together to change the outlook. The pair slashed at the bowling, attacking the boundaries from every angle, and as Colyton’s chances of a three-point win dwindled, Old Boys’ prospects of bringing off a victory commenced to appear. With time creeping relentlessly on, the bats were oager to maintain the merry pace in tho joyful hope of turning a prospective defeat into victory. Connell went at 29, nicely 'caught by Thurston off A. Walin. Penney joined Dewo and with seven minutes to go skipper Power decided to bring on his difficult bowler, Fitzherbert. Tho bats were not disconcerted and squarely faced the attack to snick an odd run or two, but rungetting at the paco the limited time available demanded was out of the question. Time ended the battle with Old Boys 15 runs short of a draw for the loss of four wickets. J. Dewe, who played a delightful innings, carried his bat for 79, while Penney was not out G.

On the other wicket like conditions were operating. Feilding, who opened the game against Public Service, supplied 111 and when rain stopped the play on the previous Saturday Service had lost ono wicket (Lange) for five runs. Resuming with Hart and McLeod, the team failed to stand up against tho success of tho bowling partnership bctw'ecn Biss and Sicvcrs, who wero never in better form or more deadly in their handling of the leather. Tho only double-figure scorers were Blaraires (19) and Wild (13), while Hart (not out 7), who opened with Lange, was in attendance throughout. The innings closed for 54. Sievcrs took six wickets for 20 and Biss four for 2G.

Feilding decided the prospects wero favourable for a decisive win, and Skipper Donaldson decided to go for runs, then declare, and make a battle of it. Fitzpatrick and Laing opened, and both wero successful in arresting the run of bad luck which had come over these bright bats duriug the past couple of appearances. Tho former treated the bowlers, Barltrop and McLeod, with every respect, and soon got into double figures, but Laing suffered an lbw decision in favour of McLeod and left the wicket after providing 3. Mantci'l joined Fitzpatrick and entered into the spirit of the effort to knock up runs as the opportunity offered.
