Cricket Challenges For the Hawke Cup
UNUSUAL POSITION ARISES A peculiar position has arisen in connection with the Hawke Cup cricket matches. The Southland Association had agreed to play .Manawatu on February 15, 16 and 18, but owing to financial difficulties the arrangements fell through.
The Marlborough Association had issued a challenge and were granted these dates. As reported, tho Southland Association secured tho requisite finaneo and decided to proceed with the challenge should this prove acceptable to Manawatu.
Mr. B. A. Brace (secretary of the Manawatu Association) communicated with tho New Zealand Cricket Council in Christchurch, and was informed that Southland would require to obtain the consent of Marlborough and Manawatu to play on the date requested. Mr. Brace took no action in the meantime, but Marlborough solved tho difficulty by advising that they had refused Southland’s request. Southland may challenge later in the season, but as the challenge from South Auckland has also to be considered, the New Zealand Cricket Council will have to decide which association shall, have the final match. At the conference of minor associations to be held in Wellingtonu this week to discuss the Plunket Shield matches Mr. A. M. Ongley expects to represent tho Manawatu Association.
