Closing Primary Schools During Hot Weather
NO AFTERNOON SCHOOL THIS WEEK The Minister of Education (Hon. S. G. Smith) decided this week that, owing to the extreme summer weather being experienced in the Dominion at the present time, primary schools could bo closed during the hottest period of the day where the local educational authorities considered tnat such action would be in the best interest of the pupils’ health.
The question of closing the Palmerston North primary schools was dealt with by a meeting held in Ihe city last evening. Those present included, representatives of the school committees, the headmasters and the two local members of the Wanganui Education Board. It was decided that, for the rest of this week only, schools snould be opened from 8.30 a.m. till 12.30 p.m. The position is to be reviewed by a sub-committee consisting of the chairman of the Combined School Committees’ Association (Mr. W. G.. Black), the president of the Headmasters’ Association (Mr. E. Bary) and Mr. M. H. Oram (Wanganui Education Board) on Monday next, when it will be decided when school is to be resumed in the afternoons. e
