Hopklrlc, officer in' charge of the veterinary laboratory at < Wallaceville, who attended the con- i gress in Melbourne of the Australian i and New Zealand Association for the : Advancement of Science, and also investigated veterinary organisations in i the Commonwealth, returned to Welling, ton by the Monowai on Monday. Dr. 1 , Hopkirk said that it was indeed an,, instruction to a New Zealand veter-., inarian to see the unconcern of Australians at foot-and-mouth disease.,. They could not understand the reason , for an embargo against British stock, , and their own embargo had been liftedj, some years ago. The authorities hoped' that soon the disease would be so well diagnosed by blood tests that the export of their cattle to New Zealand would be permitted. London had 25 air-ratfls during the Great War', in which altogether 922 bombs were dropped, 524 people were killed and 1264 injured.
The Auckland Transport Board decided yesterday to restore half of the original 10 per cent cut imposed on its employees on November 1, 1931. The restoration is effective from February 2, and the chairman said it would cost the board £14,225 annually. At the inquest at Hokitika the Coroner returned a verdict that William .Tames Webb, aged 23, single, was accidentally killed in the bu&h at Lake Kanieri on Saturday evening by John Frederick Andrews, who fired a rifie at' what he thought was a deer, but which struck Webb, killing him instantly. The men had gone out in different directions and it is not known how deceased came to tbe locality where the fatality occurred. To-morrow (Thursday) at 8 p.m. in the Empire hall, a great political demonstration. is to be held. Amongst the speakers will be Mr. B. Semple, M.P.
