Amateur Sport on Up Grade in City
SUCCESSFUL MEETING LAST NIGHT
Tho usual Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club's evening meeting was held at the Sportsgrounds last evening, when some first-class contests were witnessed by a largo number of spectators. These meetings are now proving very popular with the public, and with large entries in both cycling and running events, this amateur sport seems to have at last taken a step in tho right direction. By the form shown local athletes should this year secure championship honours at the meeting of the West Coast Centre, to be held next month.
The - ' following are tho results of events held last evening: Half-mile cycle. —First heat: E. Lawrence (scr.) 1, A. Eade (45) 2, L. Hayes (45) 3; time, 1.3. Second heat: J. Lamberton (100) 3, R. Thomas (05) 2, N. Dixon (G 5) 3; time, 1.4. Final: Eade (Feilding) 1, Lawrence 2, Hayes 3; time, 1.6.
100 yards handicap: Clarke (11) 1, Oram (9) 2, Moxon (S) 3; time, 10 1-5 sec.
Boys’ 2-lap cycle: B. Hall 1, Y.Bray 2, J. Collins 3; time, 1.45. 440 yards handicap: Findlay (15) 1, Moxon (34) and Clarke (3S), deadheat, 2; time, 50 4-ssecs.
4-milo cycle: Lawrence (scr.) 1, Hobbs (200) 2, Thomas (450) 3; time, pnrin 36 l-ssec.
Long jump: Todd (3ft Gin), 19ft llin, I; McDonald (3ft), 19ft lOin, 2; Findlay (Ift), I9ft lin, 3. E. Astin again withstood a challenge by H. Roger for the Manning badge over a distance of two laps, winning by three-quarters of a length in 1.3 S 2-5. G. Esau, N.Z. and North Island junior champion, has challenged Astin for next meeting over 3 miles. Owing to tho Feilding show the usual meeting, of the Feilding Amateur Cycle Club will be held this week on Friday instead of Wednesday.
