Massey College Can’t Pay Cycle Allowance

CITY COUNCIL INQUISITIVE .Massey College, through the Palmerston North City Council, is finding employment for a number of relief workers who, in order to get out to their work, ride bicycles. At a recent meeting of the City Council these men asked that they be allowed bicycle allowance (a matter of a few pence) the same as other relief workers employed by the council. It was pointed out to them, however, that as Massey College was really the employing authority, application would have to be made to that body and the council undertook to do this. To last night’s meeting of the council a reply was received stating that the College could not see its way to grant the allowance. Civ Hodgcns: And it is only a few pence per week. It is a great pity Massey College cannot see its way to pay the allowance seeing that it is getting continuous labour tliat is a charge on the unemployment fund. The Mayor: Which cannot be found at all for schools.

Cr. Ilodgens: I don’t want to make comparisons but there are some splendid salaries paid at Massey College, salaries'that some of our own stall’ and many a business man would like to possess , and yet the institution cannot find a few pence in cycle allowance.

Cr. Tennent asked if the workers were engaged on maintenance work at the college. The Mayor: They arc principally engaged in the research department setting out plants. I don’t think they do any weeding. Cr. Tennent asked if the engineer could ascertain if the men were doing maintenance work such as was being done in the primary schools. The Mayor: Or should you say whether the capital works being done at Massey College are any different from the maintenance work at primary schools (laughter). The information is to be obtained.
