Control of the Secondary Schools
MEETING OE LOCAL BO ARE. Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P., presided over a meeting of the Palmerston North. High Schools’ Board of Governors and Technical School Committee, held last evening. There were also present: Messrs. T. E. Hodder, G. Tremaine, \V. E. Birnie, A. J. Graham, C. Anderson, and 0. Monrad, and Mrs M. Aitchison and the heads of the three schools concerned. Apologies for unavoidable absence were received from Messrs. M. If. Oram and J. W. Euthcrfurd. tsoys' iriign scnooi. The roll number was 343 and the average attendance for the month 320, stated Mr J. Murray, rector of the Boys’ High School. Messrs. E. Caradus and H. B. Tomlinson had visited the school on October 24-2 G in connection with the awards of intermediate and higher leaving certificates. At the recent terms examinations of Victoria University College, Bruce Clegg had passed in history 11, economic 11, and political science; Colin Burrows, in English and Latin; Ernest Lewin in Latin, N. Eccleston in English, and E. Cater in Latin and French. An application for a grant for apparatus for the new science block had been made. In connection with the recent Metropolitan Show at Palmerston North, the pupils of tho agricultural classes had again assisted in various ways, and the A. and P. committee had expressed appreciation of the services rendered. The boys had also taken part in the judging competitions for certain classsc of stock, such competition having considerable educational value to them in their studies. The annual sports (which had been postponed from November 14 on account of the civic welcome to Squadron-Leader McGregor and Mr H. C. Walker) had been held that day. —The report ivas adopted. Technical School. The school had been visited irom November G to 9 by Mr W. S. La Trobe, Superintendent of Technical Education, stated Mr G. G. Hancox, director of the Technical School, in his review of the month’s activities. Prizes in art, engineering, woodwork, needlework and cookery at the recent Soring Show fixture, and the display of students’ work, had attracted much attention. The thanks of the board were duo to Mrs Aitchison and Miss Kelly for assisting in tho judging of the dinner-cooking competitions. Members of the board were cordially invited to be present at the following end-of-ycar functions:—Parents’ evening, November 29, from 7 o ’clock, annual exhibition, November 30, 7 to 9 p.m., and December 1,2 to 3.30 p.m.; annual concert in school hall, December 4. Approval was sought for expending a sum on books for class libraries. Authority was also sought, as in previous years, for making minor adjustments in the payunents to part-time teachers and for payment of overtime. Approval was sought for spending a sum during the holidays on repairs to desks, etc.—Adopted. Girls’ High School. ‘Tho roll is now 219 and tho average attendance 195.2,” stated Mrs M. Ehodes, lady principal of tho Girls’ High School, who added that a mild form of influenza had been prevalent and had caused the low attendance. The school had been very successful at the local Show iu various classes ‘‘The school was most successful in the terms examinations of Victoria College for B. and B.Com. degrees. The following were the results:—Degree of 8.A.: English, stage II —Joyce Cruttenden, Mona Johansen, Betty Macphcrsou, Dorothy Smith; Stage I —Ebba Anderson, Kyra Mutch. Latin: Stage I Mona Johansen, Kyra Mutch, Dorothy Smith. French: Stage ll—Joyce Cruttenden, Dorothy Smith; Stage I —Kyra Mutch, Enid Sinclair. History: Stage II —Mona Johansen, Betty Macphersou; Stago I—Ebba Anderson. Economics: Stage I —Joyce Cruttenden, Betty Maepherson. . Degree of 8.C0m.: Economic history —Joyce McColl; economic geography—Joyce McColl. Past pupils of the school also obtained very successful results. A strong committee of tho Parents’ Association has all arrangements well in hand for the garden fete on Wednesday, 21st, starting at 2 p.m. The physical culture display should bo tho best yet shown. In addition, the dressmaking classes will stage a mannequin parade, and’thcro will be a display of work by' the commercial, art and other classes. Thero will also be a poster display, the collection shown last year having been added to considerably this year. Tho tennis court at tho school house is now in constant use, and is proving a great acquisition.”—Adopted.
