The Prime Minister (Mr J. A. Lyons) clarified the meat restriction situation to-day. He said the British Government had suggested that the Commonwealth Government should arrange for a cessation of killing of cattle for export for two months, thus to enable the British Government to deal with the meat situation in the United Kingdom. The Commonwealth Government, however, was unable to concur, owing to the likelihood of causing unemployment. Alternatively, it had proposed a suspension of the export of frozen beef and veal' for two months, as this would not be accompanied by any cessation of killing and would not constitute a restriction.
Mr Lyons added that a final statement would be issued after a pending meeting of the Meat Advisory Committee.
