Brandishing a knife at a group of men and announcing that he would ‘‘go for anybody” who came near, Michael Walsh, a seaman, aged 4-1, attracted the attention of a traffic inspector, Mr. Kay, in Christchurch. Mr Kay disarmed Walsh, who was then taken to the police station. Walsh yesterday appeared before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., charged with behaving in a threatening manner in Moorhouse Avenue, and with harrying a dangerous weapon, a sheathknife, without lawful purpose. Pleading guilty to both charges, Walsh said that a man tripped him and he took the knife out to frighten him away. The Magistrate, in ordering Walsh to come up for sentence if called upon within throe months on the first charge, praised the conduct of Inspector Kay. “It was praiseworthy in every rospect,” he said. “The inspector did his duty as a citizen.” Preparations are now being made for the departure from Dunedin of the Byrd supply ships Bear of Oakland and Jacob Ruppert to the Antarctic within the next seven or eight weeks. The Bear of Oakland has just completed an extensive overhaul and repairs, and has also had a new foremast fitted. The vessel is now at Port Chalmers, and will return to her former berth at Dunedin after the departure of H.M.S. Dunedin on November 17. The Jacob Ruppert is also in first-class sea-going order. Lieutenant English stated that the Bear of Oakland will leave Dunedin on December 26, and the Jacob Ruppert will leave Port Chalmers about January 12 for tho Antarctic. The Bear of Oakland should reach the iee-p&ck about a week after her departure. The Jacob Ruppert will then be advised of the condition of the icepack, and that report will determine the date of the departure of the latter vessel. If ice conditions are favourable the Jacob Ruppert will probably sail before January 12. , The ships will then proceed to the lee Barrier, where Rear-Admiral Byrd and members of his expedition will be embarked,, and also the equipment for the return voyage to New Zealand and America-
