Wellington Beat Maoris

Lack of Smooth Combination Among Tourists::

TENDENCY TO RECKLESS PASSING

Per Press Association. . WELLINGTON, Last Night. The Rugby season was closed on Saturday, when Wellington defeated the Maoris by 11 points to 6, in. a patchy game. Wellington led by G —3 at the interval, but the scores stood equal at G—G until late in the game, when the Maori forwards tired and for the first time in the game Wellington played like a team. The Maoris showed individual cleverness, but lacked smooth combination, and their handling was uncertain while they passed recklessly. Wright opened the scoring for Wei-' lington with a solo effort on tho left wing, followed by a try by Page from a brilliant opening by Lilburne. The Maoris’ only score in tho first spell was obtained by Smith after McDonald had cleverly drawn the defence. A penalty by H. Harrison early in the second spell squared tho scores, but late in the game Wright beat several men on his flank and sent the ball inflcld to Page, who drew the full-back and sent Dellabarca over under the posts. Canterbury beat West Coast in the last representative Rugby match of the season by 25 points to 21. As tho scores indicate, the game was fast and open. The Canterbury backs rose to great heights at one stage, piling up points rapidly, but in the second half the West Coast forwards, playing a magnificent game in the loose and profiting by many Canterbury mistakes, took the score from 25 —S to 25—21, and the crowd, appreciating tho gallant effort, cheered the visitors hearily. Generally tho Coast team were superior in tho forwards, but their back play lacked finish and Canterbury’s fast three-quarter'line showed much better quality. The home forwards gave .their backs plenty of the ball, which they employed in fine passing rushes, yielding a string of tries. Best and A. and M. Wooley were the outstanding forwards for Marlborough, while Lane, Patchett and Bartlett were conspicuous among the backs. Harding, Peggio and Robertson were the leading Buffer forwards and Strachan and Holder the pick of the backs. Patchett (3) R.
