Attempt to Escape Has Fatal Consequences
TWO OF DILLINGER’S GANG TRY TO CHEAT DEATH SENTENCE.
United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph —Copyright. Received Sunday, 7 p.m. NEW YORK, Sept. 22.
A message from Columbus (Ohio) states that Charles Maklcy and Harry Pierpont, two members of Dillingcr’s gang, who were awaiting the execution of the death sentence at the Ohio State Penitentiary, wero thwarted in a bold attempt to escape to-day. Maklcy was shot and killed, while Pierpont was seriously injured by the guards’ riot guns.
Attempting to copy the “■wooden gun’* tactics of Dillinger, who used such a device to escape from Crown Point gaol, they made imitation revolvers out of soap and attempted to bluff their way out of the death cells. The guards, however, were prepared for such a ruse and quickly halted their attempt to break gaol.
