Miss Kay Goes Round in 73

Ladies’ Championship Golf at Titirangi

MRS. DEIGHTON AND MISS BAILEY WIN FOURSOMES Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Last Night. The third day’s play in the Now Zealand ladies’ golf championship meeting took place at Titirangi on Saturday, the second round of the championship being decided in the morning and the foursomes championship in the afternoon. Conditions in the morning were ideal for golf, there being a grey sky and no wind, while a light dew on the fairways and greens mado for their improvement, if anything. The sensation of the morning was. a round of 73 by Miss Oliver Kay, the present holder of the title. This constituted a record for the course, but cannot be recognised as such, because it was done in match play. Miss Kay’s figures were two better than the scratch score, which was equalled the previous day by Miss Barns-Graham, of Gisborne. The foursomes championship went to Mrs K. S. Deighton (Titirangi) and Miss L. Bailey (Victoria), who returned a card two better than that of the holders, Misses Kay and Gaisford. A feature of Saturday’s play was undoubtedly Miss Kay’s brilliant round of 73. In registering two under the scratch score for the course, she went round in five minutes under two hours, whereas the average time taken is about half an hour longer. Miss Kay’s card read as follows: Out: 4 1 3 3 5 4 4 3 3 —3-4. In: 43554 4-1 5 5—39.

At only two holes on the way out was the champion over scratch score, these being the fifth and the seventh. She was under the scratch score at no fewer than fivo holes, to be three under scratch for the first half. She was one over on the way back. Although a few of Mrs Deighton s supporters wero hopeful of her winning, her success over Miss Helcan, the Wanganui, champion, came as n general surprise. Her approaching and putting were very consistent and stood her in good stead, especially on the wav home. A brilliant putt of oO feet at "the 14th was really the turning point of the-match, as it made Mrs Deighton dormy four after having been two up at the turn. Miss Helena putted very -well over the first half and played some wonderful recovery shots on occasions.

Popular Poursomes Win The win scored by Mrs Deighton and Miss Bailey in the foursomes championship was a popular one. .Miss Bailey’s participation in tho win was mado possible by the generous action of Miss Bray, a member of the Titirangi Club, one of the championship officials. Upon learning that. Miss Bailey had not been drawn with a partner, Miss' Bray gave place to the Victorian. The winners started well, when, after Mrs Deighton had pulled her drive, her partner played a fine second on to the green and the Titirangi player mado amends, holding a very long putt for a birdie throe. From then they played steady goif, going out in 38 and returning in 40. They had birdies at the sixth and tenth and did ten others in bogey. Mrs Deighton’s superb putting contributed largely to the win. The winners’ card read: — Out: 3053 54 3 4 5 —3 S. In: 43654455 4—40.

The previous holders oil the title, Atisses Kay and Gaisi’ord, played with the Australians, Misses Macleod and Laseelles, and were followed by easily the largest gallery of the tourney so far. The New. Zealanders had four threes in their round, but a seven at the fifth, where Miss Gaisford drove into a bunker and then badly sliced her third, was a blemish on an otherwise good round.
