Beagle Mounds to Be Used at Hamilton
FIRST TIME IN DOMINION Per Press Association. HAMILTON, Last Night. For the first time in tile Dominion, beagle hounds will be used to form the trail of the cross-country race to-mor-row under the auspices of the Hamilton Harrier Club. The hounds stand from 12 to 1G inches in height and are used extensively in Britain for beagling, or organised pursuit of hares, the hounds, hunting mainly by scent, being followed by the field on foot. Three dogs, the only specimens of their kind in the Dominion, owned by -Mr. T. E. Pearson, of Hamilton, will bo released at the start of the run. Owing to their comparatively short legs, beagles are not capable of outstripping the pack following, although, if the scent is not too obscure, they may be expected to lead their followers at a steady trot. Described as one of the purest sports, beagling lias existed as a British form of athletics for centuries.
