First Round of New Zealand Championship
MRS. DODGSHUN BEATEN Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Last Night. The first round of the New Zealand ladies' golf championship was played at Titirangi to-day in perfect weather. A light south-westerly made play interesting and tlie dry conditions gave plenty of run to the ball but made pitched approach shots difficult. The fact that a number of the best players had drawn a bye, including the Australians, Miss Bailey and Aliss AlaeLcod, and Miss Kay a iid Aliss Gaisford, robbed the first round of some of its interest.
The spectators gave most attention to Ihe nut. li between Airs. Clive Robinson, the Australian champion, and Mrs. Dodgshun, and were treated to some fine golf, with Ihe putting of the visitor tho chief contributing factor to her victory. ’fhe-other Australians, Aliss Lascelles and Aliss Joan Hammond, mul easy wins. Nine of the ether 16 matches were won by local players and there were no surprises. Results: — Mrs. J. C. Peacoen beat Aliss K, Horton, 3 and L Aliss J. llammend beat Airs. 1. Rota, 7 and 6. Aliss Burns-Graham beat Airs. J. C. Finlay, 3 and 2. Miss Al. Ward beat Airs. T. B. Weston, l up Miss O. .Slovens beat Mrs. McCarthy, 1 up. Miss K. Jlanson beat Aliss J. Slovenson, 4 and 3. Mrs. Robinson beat Airs. Dodgshun, 3 and J. Miss J. Seifert beat Aliss P. Lowes by default. Airs. T. Lean beat Airs. G. Clark, J up. Aliss AL Stevens beat Aliss E. Upton 2 up. Airs. R. Deighton beat Aliss N. Grace, 7 and 6. Miss P. llclean beat Airs. 11. Johnston, 5 and -1. Aliss B. Hill beat Aliss B. Holmes, 3 and 1. Mrs. Al. Alison beat Aliss \V, James, 6 and 5. Airs. G. iJutlic beat Airs. F. Preston. 3 and 2. Airs. G. Ferguson beat Mrs. G. McAlillan, 5 and 3. Airs. J. Wilson beat Aliss 13. Rutherford, 0 and 5. Airs. R. Grace beat Mrs. A. Abbott. 1 and 3. Miss C. Lascelies beat Mrs. W. Butt, 6 and -1. Other Competitions. The stroke handicap competition, for the Coronation Aledal, resulted in a win for Mrs. 11. K, Hughes, with a net score of 72.
in the senior division, for players whose handicaps ranged from scratch to 10, three players Miss Mona MacLeod, Miss O. Stevens and Mrs. 11. \Y. Johnston, tied with net scores of 74 and on a recount of the last nine holes the trophy went to Miss MacLeod. 'l'lie trophy for tiie best gross score was won by M'ss 0. Stevens, with 78. Only four of the matches in the championship went to the last hole and a number were won tjy substantial margins. The. best score clone during the matches was that of -Miss Joan Hammond, the New South Wales champion, who, in beating -Mrs. 1. Rota, of Haworn, by 7 and G, completed the course in 78. Two other scores in tho 70's were done during the day, both in the Coronation Medal. Miss O. Stevens, of North Shore, completed the round in 78, including three sixes, which were balanced by four threes. The next best was that of t tic ex-Australian champion, Miss Mona -Mad.cod, who, in a round of 79, did a number of brilliant holes, particularly a fine three at the last.

The second round of the amateur championship was played this afternoon and results were: — Cathro beat Saunders, 5 and 4. Haworth beat Goss at the 20th. Guy beat Hapc 2 and 1. Dale beat Silk 5 and 4. The semi-finals will be played on Saturday morning, when Cathro plays Haworth and Guy plays Dale. C.
