Women’s Institutes
TE ARAKUEA The monthly meeting of the Te Arakura W.I. was held in the hall for the first time last Wednesday, and will go down in the annals of the institute as a very bright occasion. Visitors from other institutes, many local friends and members made a record attendance. The president, Mrs Griffith, in welcoming visitors and members, commented on the advantages of the new environment. The meeting took tho form of a social afternoon, song 3 being rendered by Mrs 11. B. Clapham and Miss I. Dewar; recitations by Miss M. Firth; pianoforte solos by Miss E. Christensen, and violin solos by Miss B'. Clapham. The committee acted as hostesses, and after tea was served a play was staged by the drama circle, entitled, “Mrs Sharpe Marries Again,” the players being Misses I. Benge, M. Fir-th and M. E. Hansen, and Mes-dam-es J. J. Ilume, J. Stanley and W. E. Thomas. Mrs Whisker reported that tho garden competition, for which ten entries were received, would be judged by Mr Mason, of Feilding, tho first week in October. This competition, which is new to tho district, has created a great deal of interest. A little rain just now would be a big help to the flowers which aro rather backward with the cold dry winds and heavy frosts. Several new members were elected. The next ' meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 10, when the competition will be for the best mixed spring flowers arranged in 21b. treacle tins, and the afternoon is intended to be spent in folk dancing.
