YESTERDAY’S GALLOPS AT . AWAPUNI

SPRINTERS HAD. THE WIND AGAINST THEM

■ The weather was line I'or track work jat. Awapuni yesterday, morning, but there was a fairly strong breeze which made it a solid punch for the gallopers over the last three furlongs. The course proper was open for fast work and the flags were out in the centre of the course. Square Acre, who is not iu at Foxtou. with. W. J. Broughton up, was sprinted half a mile. The ilrst furlong was slow, but Square Acre was going along smoothly at the finish and he cut tho distance out in s,3Asees. Sandy Bix (0. Thomson), the quick ’.jumper recently arrived from the. Waikato, was given a round.over the schooling hurdles,. and ho never -looked like putting a, wrong, foot. There Is no shadow of doubt that, this chap cau jump. Severe (W. .1. Broughton) was not asked to do her best over half a mile, but she looks well and she stretched out to her work as if she liked it. Her next appearance under silk will be at Masterton. Bee Acre (L. H. Jones) was associated with Raparahara (G. Tattcrsall) over seven furlongs. Bee Aero started well and was with Raparahara to the straight cntranco but she did not go on with it and Raparahara drew away oyer the last bit, the seven furlongs taking him .1.35. Catalogue (It. Chisholm) and Round Score (W. J. Broughton) repeated, their effort of Tuesday morning,. Catalogue going the mile and Round Score seven furlongs. Catalogue begTfn smartly, and after a furlong was picked up by Round Score, Broughton timing his run very well. Catalogue held a slight lead- going down the back and to the straight, where Round Score came at him. Catalogue, however, finished solidly and retained tho margin to the post, being clocked to run the mile in 1.45. Catalogue figures in the principal handicap at poxton and it is suggested that B. H.' •Morris will be the rider. An interesting sprint was that in which Symeony, the Gascony Jilly, aDd Legatee, winner of the Debutante Stakes, at Wanganui, ‘figured. Voitre was on Legatee and Broughton on Symeony. They were going when they flashed past the three-furlong peg and Symeony set the pace to the straight entrance where Legatee ran up to her very quickly. Symeony, however, had plenty iu reserve, and. a nice finishing run landed her to the post a furlong in front of Legatee. The latter could have dono better and tho time was SSsecs. Both are in at Foxton. The Storm Wind (C. Thomson) jumped four hurdles and he treated each of them with great respest, giving an indifferent display. Going Gay (L. H. Jones) was half a length in front of Alchemic (Tattersall) at the end of four furlongs cut out in 53 4-5 secs after a slow beginning. Lord Moutoa (Voitrc) and Palm (Broughton) had a good go over five furlongs. Palm got a bit the better of the start, but there was little between them at any stage and Lord Moutoa ■had just his head in front at tho post. The time was 1.5 1-5 and both moved attractively. Oalydon (A. McDonald) was taken quietly over three of the schooling hurdles. • Good Hunting,, with L. H. Jones up, was sprinted seven furlongs. He appeared to be going well within himselt all the way but he recorded the useful time of 1.32 4-5. luveresk. (Broughton) was always in front of Boudoir (S. Anderson) in a seven furlong flutter and although Boudoir challenged at the bottom of tho straight, Inveresk was . bowling along in tlio van when the post was reached. The time was 1.34 4-ss. Round Up (Anderson), Rompalong ((Broughton) and Pomposity (Voitre) finished in that order at the end of three furlongs which took 38 2-ss. There was little between them a furlong from home but Round Up had it on the' others at the finish! Aiguille (Jones), beat. Ebeum (Broughton) over four furlongs cut out in 52 4-ss, and it was quite a good effort on the part of Aiguille, who, after his let up, was having his second sprint. He loks well after his holiday and it should not be long before he reappears under racing conditions. Rereatu (Voitre) had Bodylino (Anderson) as a companion over live and tho former was not troubled to draw away over the final bit, the time being 1.45 4-5. ; King Thomond (G. Wynd) was a shade in front; of Morrath (Voitre) at the end of live furlongs, the last three being put behind in 40s. Flaxen beat Tommy Atkins over seven, which luok. them 1.30 2-5.

MISHAP TO APPRENTICE Ray Ireland, one of tho lads-employ-ed by tiro McDonald stable, liad a nasty fall at Awapuni yesterday morning. Two unnamed lrorses were galloping and when approaching the three-furlong peg the one Ireland was on shied, possibly at some newly-cut wood. He swerved towards a flag and wdien he ; tried to avoid this .the boy became unseated, falling heavily. He wms unconscious for some time but came to later. After receiving medical attention, Ireland was moved to Mrs McDonald’s house, where ho will have to remain in bed for a few days. The medical report indicated that the injuries, which are not likely to prove serious, are concussion and shock. . . ■ WINOOKA RETURNS TO WORK Tliough Winooka has visited the Raiidwick course several times after breakfast since his return from America ho renewed acquaintance with the running ground/ for tho iirst time one morning last week (says a Sydney writer). Ridden by J. Pike, Winooka seemed to recognise his old convincing ground and neighed with pleasure as

lie trotted on the cinders. The horse looks big and strong, but is still wearing his winter coat which consequently does not show the. lustre that is characteristic of his appearance when in racing trim. ■ AUCKLAND RACING CLUB | Nominations for tho spring meeting of the Auckland Racing Club and first forfeits for the Great Northern Guineas and Welcome Stakes are due with the secretary, Mr ■ W. S. Spence, at 5 p.m. this evening. KING COLOSSUS IN TROUBLE After the New Zealand horse, King Colossus, had delayed the start of the Centenary Cup at Epsom hist Saturday week for live minutes, the stipendiary stewards intimated to the trainer of the gelding, It. Sinclair, that they would recommend the committee of the V.R.O. that the nomination of the gelding be refused in the metropolitan area. RED MANFRED WELL Since being trained at. Foxton, Red Manfred has made good progress in his preparation ami lias been galloping in brilliant; style. This good horse will have his first outing of the season at Foxlon on Saturday, whore he figures in tivo events, the Gold Cup and tho Robinson Handicap; but no decision has yet been reached as to which event he will contest. On appearances, however, Red Manfred should race well in. whatever race lie starts 'in. BRANDING ON THE GUMS Tho Australian racing authorities are very much perturbed at present, events that’have occurred during the last few months suggesting that ringing-in is being practised in more than one quarter! Some time ago steps were taken to have horses branded, but apparently this'has not proved a deterrent, as it has been shown that no difficulty is experienced in faking tho brands. In a letter'to the'“Australasian, ” a correspondent offers a ' solution for this trouble. “There are several objections,” he wrote, “to firobrariding of horses. It involves cruelty to the animal, which is also disfigured, and it makes the faking of brands a simple matter. A much more effective method of branding, and one which involves no cruelty, is to tattoo the registration numbers or brands on the gums of the animal. When a member of the South African Army Veterinary Corps, I introduced the system of tattooing all army horses, mules and donkeys, and this was done immediately they were purchased. The brand is tattooed on the upper gum with a special ink, and is done with ordinary needles fitted into a pencil. The system is simple and cheap, and if adopted by the racing authorities would save them much trouble, because it would be exceedingly difficult to fake them, and verification of brands would be a simple matter. I have branded thousands of horses in that way, with satisfactory results. ” RACING DATES (In New. Zealand.) "September 20, 22—Geraldine R.C. September 22 —Foxton 'R.C.
