Per Press Association. HASTINGS, Last .Night. The New Zealand boxing championships opened in Hastings this evening. The bouts were confined to preliminaries in the various weights, the standard displayed not being high. The results were as follow: — Flyweight: McKay (Napier), 7.134 beat D. McPherson (Manawatu) 8.0 on a technical knock-out; B. Boyle (H. 8.) 7.11 beat W. Drew (Otago) 7.11 on points.
Bantamweight: P. Kelly (Auckland) 8.3} beat W. Evans (Motucka) by default; T. Robinson (Marlborough) 5.4 beat 11. C. Fleming (Nelson) on points. Featherweight: C. Gordon (Taranaki) S.l2} beat W. Aitlcen (Wellington) on points; I W. Hawes (Greymouth) 8.9} beat G. E. Spencer (Southland) 8.13 on poiuts; A. C. Stock (Hawke’s Bay) S.l2} beat W. Evans (Motucka) B.ll} by a knockout; N. H. Fisher (Christchurch) 8.13$ boat W. Borcovsky (Marlborough) 8.13$ on l>oints.
Lightweight: C. Elsmore (Nelson) 9.7} beat O. tiibons (Manawatu) 9.3 on a technical knock-out; J. Jarvis (Taranaki) 9.1} beat M. Callaghan (Gisborne) 9.7 on a knock-out in tho second round; P. Ramsay (Otago) 9.4 beat W. Hawkins (Greymouth) 9.7 on points; J. D. Nelligan (Christchurch) 9.1$ defeated L. Murray (Wellington) 9.4$ on points. Welterweight: M. Candy (Marton) 10.5 beat J. Taylor (Hawke’s Bay) 10. Gon a knock-out in the second round; W. Jack (Southland) 10.3} beat F. Hopkins (Manawatu) 10.0} on points; W. G. Parrjs (Wellington) 10.3 boat E. Fail (Christchurch) 9.95. Middleweight: S. Matchett (Gisborne) 11.1} beat J. Thornton (Taihape) 11.0 by a knock-out in the second round; M. O’Connell (Oamaru) 10.12} beat T. Lister (Ashburton) 11.2} on points; W. Howsou (Greymouth) 11.2 beat R. Reid (Wellington) 11.9} on points; J. Davis (Wairarapa) 11.2 beat H. Percy (Hawke’s Bay) 11.0$ on points. Light-heavyweight: M. Soane (Motueka) 12.0 beat 11. E.
