PERSONALITIES
Air John Benclba Payton, wellknown figure at Dunedin in the early days, passed away at Christ church at the ago of 82. Deceased is survived by two sons, Alessrs John Powell Peyton and Edward James Payton, of Wellington, and two daughters, Airs F. Aloore, of Alo-era, Lower lintt, and Mrs Annie Burns, of Palmerston North. There are several grandchildren and grcal-grandehildrcn.
The death of Air. Robert Were, a former resident of the Kairnnga, occurred at liis residence at Alangaohac, near Te Kuiti, recently. Deceased was born in London in 1855, and, after farming at Tiverton, in Devonshire, came to New Zealand in 1873 in the ship Star of India., landing ac Lyttelton. He spfeilt several years iii Canterbury and then went to Hawke’s Bay, whero he married Miss Af. A. Dowling. After their marriage Mr. aud Airs. Were came to the Alanawatu district, and acquired a farm close to Palmerston North. Deceased became a member of the Alanawatu Road Board and the Drainage Board, and when ,tho Kairanga County was formed he was one of the foundation members of the council, later becoming chairman.
