As he did not appear after several hours, his friends raised l.he alarm. Search was made from both sides of the mountain, but the searchers returned unsuccessful early on August 3, when a fresh search was organised. The aeroplane was forced to return owing to tho heavy mists. Searchers on foot were driven back' by drenching rain and mist which became so dense that they themselves wiere in peril. The police took no part in the search, the reason being that thero are two counties —-Perthshire and Stirlingshire —in tbc area and no lead had been given by. either police force. . , It was understood that a shepherd warned Air. Lippiatt not to continue the ascent. The height of Ben Lomond is 3192 feet.
