Kiwitea County Council
MONTHLY MEETING Tho monthly meeting of the Kiwitea County Council was held at Kimbolton yesterday, Cr. L. T. McLean (chairman) presiding. There were also present. Crs. \V. P. Shaw, F. O. Stack, J. H. Williamson, F. E. Tappin, W. Hair and N. V. Shannon. Crs. Brown and Wood were granted leave of absence. Overseer’s Report. Tho county overseer, Mr. F. H. Eggers, submitted tho following report: Cheltenham riding.—Pot-hole repairs have been carried out on tho Nos. 52 and 377 sections of main highways and similar work had also received attention on roads othor than main highways. Those roads have also been trimmed with tho power grader. The roadman had attended to tho usual maintenance work as well as taking delivery of maintenance metal. Tho following additional quantities of maintenance metal have been delivered by the contractor:—No. 377 main highway, 175 cubic yards; Cheltenham Cross road, 85J cubic yards; Beaconsficld Valley road, 95 cubic yards; Hayne’s lino, 111 cubic yards. All contract quantities have been completed in tho riding. Kiwitea riding.—Pot-hole patching work had been carried out on tho No. 52 section of main highway. This road had also received frequent attention from tho power grader. The roadman had attended to usual maintenance work throughout tho riding. The county truck delivered the following quantities of maintenance metal during the pas month, viz.:—No. 52 main highway, 31! cubic yarns; Bryco’s line, 147 A cubic yards. In conjunction with the councillor for the riding an inspection of tho proposed road extension near the To Awa bridge was made and it was decided to carry out tho work with our own staff and plant. The work will be put in hand in about a week’s time.
Waituna Tiding.—Tho roadman had attended to road surface work and tho cleaning out of water-tables on the section of the No. 377 main highway. This section of highway had been trimmed by the power grader plant. Minor repair work had been carried out on the Rangitikei Valley road south and the road surface trimmed by tho grador. The contractor had mado a start delivering maintenance metal on tho section of tho No. 377 main highway. Ongo riding.—Tho roadman had attended to pot-hole repairs and general work throughout the riding; also taking delivery of maintenance metal on tho section of tho No. 377 main highway. This section of main highway had also been trimmed by tho grader. Tho contractor completed the delivery of maintenance metal on the No. 377 main highway on tho 12th instant. Total quantity delivered 555 cubic yards.
Kimbolton riding.—Tho sections of tho Nos. 52 and 53 main highways have been trimmed by tho power grader and pot-hole repair work carried out. A few subsidences took placo on tho No--52 main highway and tho repairs will bo carried out as soon as tho timber comes to hand. Repair work had been attended to on roads other than highways. The roadman had assisted with metal carting in tho Kiwitea riding. The quantity of metal delivered by the county truck during tho mouth is a 3 follows:—No. 52 main highway, 6 cubic yards; back streets, Kimbolton, 5 cubic yards. Some work in the nature of stripping and preparing metal for carting out in the Kimbolton pit has been carried out.
Peep-o’-Day riding.—The roadman on the eastern section of the riding had attended to road surface work and water-tables on the section of No. 52 main highway; also removing slips and attending to minor Toad maintenance work on roads other than main highways. On the western section minor road surface work had been carried out and drains cleaned out. It will be necessary to have a, certain quantity of metal carted out on tho Pakihikura road for pot-hole repairs. Pakihikura Tiding.—The roadman had attended to the usual maintenance work throughout the riding. Some grading work had been carried out by the. small grader plant; also trimming and raking in new metal carted out in the autumn. Repair work had received attention on the Mangarero road and a short metalled section trimmed by the grader.
Eaugiwahia riding.—A section of the Ko. 52 main highway had been trimmed by the small grader plant and pothole repairs effected. The usual maintenance work had received attention and some small slips have been removed. It is necessary to have some pothole repair metal, carted out on the main south road and it had been arranged for the work to be put in hand immediately.
Hautapu riding.—A section of the Ko. 52 main highway in the riding had been trimmed by the small grader plant. Pot-hole repairs have been carried out on Mania road. The roadmen have been employed most of their time in removing slips on tho No. 52 main highway, Cliff and Upper Kawhatau roads. A broken culvert on Upper Kawhatau road had been renewed with 12-inch concreto pipes. A few more small culverts will have to bo renewed at an early dato and tho necessary concrete pipes for tho work have been ordered. Correspondence.
Tho Eeceiver of Land Eevenue, Wellington, advised payment 'of “thirds” accrued from Crown sections to 31/3/34, amounting to £4B 15s 2d.—Eoceived. Tho District Engineer, Public Works Department, forwarded details of the main highway annual estimates for 1934-35, covering both construction and maintenance. The items in tho Kiwitea county approved by the Main Highways Board are:—No. 52 main highway Awahuri-Mangaweka via Kimbolton (Cheltenham-Coulter ’s lino) (preparation for sealing) £3375, £3 for £1; (do.) sealing £IOOO, £2 for £l. No. 53 main highway Kimbolton-Apiti bridge maintenance main highway, Eeilding-Hunterville, construction Ilarro’s bridge £406, £2 for £1; maintenance work £607, £3 for £1.—Beeeivcd.
The Hon. J. G. Cobbe, M.P. for Oroua, acknowledged receipt of copy of resolution passed by this council in support of a protest made by tho Wanganui .County Council concerning .tho opera-
tions of tho Transport Board in rural districts. —Received. Tho Palmerston North Hospital Board forwarded (a) summary of the audited income and expenditure accounts of tho board for tho year ended 31/3/34; (b) statement showing the growth of charitable aid expenditure in New Zealand during the last 10 years. —Received.
The New Zealand Counties’ Association advised that tho Transport Coordination Board had decided to investigate tho problem of motor taxation and was obtaining tho views of certain transport and road interests, and tho board would bo glad to havo any evidence or representations tho association might desiro to submit. The main phases of taxation to be covered by the investigation are: —(a), Heavy traffic license fees; (b) petrol tax; (c) tyre tax; (d) drivers’ licenses; (o) annual licenses; (f) Customs duties on imported cars or parts, etc. It. was decided to advise tho Counties’ Association that tho council is in favour of the present system of motor taxation. Mr. Cowan McKinnon wrote, drawing tho council’s attention to several bad corners on tho To Para Para road. This matter was held over pending a report from tho county overseer to be presented to tho next meeting. Mrs. F. Eoache, Upper Kawhatau, requested tho council to consider the question of improvements to the Auputa road. —It was decided to advise the writer that *ho Tiding has no funds available for tho work. Mr. T. Henshaw and others wrote, complaining of stock being at largo on tho Terraco road, Kimbolton. The matter was referred to the Tangcr for attention. General. It wa3 resolved that the persons mentioned in tho ranger’s report for allowing stock to bo at largo on roads in the county bo prosetued. Accounts amounting to £759 5s 5d were passed for payment.
