Effective Treatment for Would-be Tennis Players
Many a would-be tennis enthusiast is prevented from indulging in her favourito sport becauso her feet get out of condition so easily. • This is particularly tho ' case with those who liavo to be much on their feet in ordinary shoes, every day of tho week, or on the other hand, those who sit a great deal ;ahd do not get much walking exercise. Feet which aro healthy should bo able to stand an extra amount of exercise without developing blisters or aching muscles, and the best thing to do is to get them into good condition by a little regular attention. The first thing most people do when tlieir feet feel tender is to soak them in hot water, and if they leave it at that they may make matters worse. Hot water relaxes the muscles, and when they arc toned up again they are apt to beeomo more tender than ever. The water should not be too hot, and a few drops, of glycerine should be added to it. * Oatmeal makes a splendid substitute for soap. A few grains of Condy’si crystals in the water, just to colour it a deep pink, also have an astringent and hardening effect on the skin. Eubbing tho feet with methylated spirits is another good method of hard ening them before undertaking a strenuous set. The majority of girls have found tho e-reat advantage of wearing those little socks cither over a pair of stockings or alone. The woollen ones aro really better than tho cotton. Make, certain that they aro large enough. It is better to allow plenty for tho feet swelling when hot, and there is nothing more annoying than tight socks when playing. {Several exercises -can bo done that will strengthen the muscles of tho feet. Barefooted, rise on the toes, and stay in that position for about 10 seconds, then lower the feet gradually until the weight is resting on the heels. Ecpent about 25 times. Another good exercise uses tho feet alternately. Start by standing on tho right foot, raising tho left one till it is about IS inches in front of tho right. How balance on the right foot, lowering the body till you aro almost sitting on tho right heel. Eise gradually, and repeat the exercise with tho other foot, and continue
10 times with each leg.
