Women’s Institutes

RANGIOTU. The August meeting of the Rangiotu W.I. was held on Wednesday afternoon, Mrs. Board presiding. There was a very good attendance, including visitors from Now Plymouth, Palmerston North, Baincsse, Glen Oroua and Wellington. It; was decided to contribute £1 towards the W.I. club rooms in Palmerston North. It was also resolved to hold a social evening on September 21 to augment the funds. There will, bo progressive euchre, novel competitions and dancing. Mrs. Hamlin, of Glen Oroua, gave a most, interesting talk on her travels overseas, taking her hearers with her in fancy, to visit the great show places of Eondon, rural England, tho battlefields of Franco and tho burial grounds on tho Somme, whero so many of our New Zealand soldiers lie. Sirs. Hamlin wa3 accorded a very hearty voto of thanks on tho motion ol the president. Tho points prize competition was for tho best knitted infant’s vest and there were a great many entries, some very fine examples of needlework being displayed. Tho winners were: Mrs. Saywell 3, Mrs. Toogood 2, Miss Beard 3. For the best arranged bowl of spring flowers Airs. Hughes secured first place with Airs. S. Pearce soeond and Aliss Hughes third. Airs. Hamlin and Mrs. Sanson, of Glen Oroua, kindly acted as judges. An amusing “bean” game was enjoyed, Miss Hughes being the winner. Afternoon tea was served by tho hostesses, Alesdames Whiteman and H. Pearce, Alisses Myra Simmons and E. Berkahn. A bring and buy stall for federation funds did brisk business. The next meeting will be held on September 26 when there will be a demonstration on floral work by Airs. Galland, of Palmerston North. The points competition will be for the best sultana cake and there will be a special competition for those who have not yet won a prize at the institute. This will he for the best novelty for bedroom or bathroom, and Aliss Hughes has kindly given a special prize for the best entry. RONGOTEA

Rongotca women certainly take a keen interest in their institute as proved by the large attendances at the monthly meetings. Airs Eoy Scott presided on Tuesday and introduced Airs Christian, of Palmerston North, who gave an interesting talk on “Women in History,” the speaker being accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The monthly competition was for tin-foil work and resulted: Married ladies, Airs H. Scott 1, Mrs C. Davison 2, Airs E. H. Gust 3. Single ladies: Aliss L. Davis 1, Miss A. Buchanan 2 and 3. Mrs A. Burgess and Airs A. Trenkner were appointed to All the post of sunshino committee. Tho hostesses were Alesdames A. W. Alorcom, Rees and E. •J. Arnott and Alisses E. Noel, E. Knight and A. Hunt.
