Wrestling Association, Messrs W. Ross and G. Young are taking part in '.he North Island amateur -wrestling championship tournament at Hamilton. The death occurred in Wellington last night of Mrs. Pat-tie hi. Corrigan, wife of Lieutenant Colonel A. A. Corrigan, M.8.E., in her 74th year. She was a prominent charity worker for the past 4.0 years. The friends of Mr H. D. Milne, of (lie mails branch of the Palmerston North Post Office, will regret to loam of the death of his mother, which took place at Christchurch on Monday, at the age of S 3 years. The engagement is announced between Miss Kathleen Ferris, of Wellington, and Mr. John Farrell, of Auckland, manager for J. C. Williamson, Ltd. The marriage will take place this month, states an exchange. Dr. Campbell Wcst-Watson, Bishop of Christchurch, will represent the New Zealand Bench of Bishops at the All-Australian Assembly ot the Church of England at Melbourne from November 8 to 10. The death has occurred of Mr John Francis Carr, a retired officer of the Post and Telegraph Department, aged 05 years. The late Mr Carr was for about three years postmaster at Adelaide road, Wellington, in the early 'nineties.
Mr G. Stephens, chairman of the New Zealand Fruit Export Control Board, was defeated in one of the two postal elections for members of the board which closed yesterday. At last evening’s annual meeting of the Palmerston North Gun Club Mr. P. A. Meehan, of Newbury, was elected an honorary life member of that body. The president mentioned that Mr. .Meehan had been associated with the dub over a long period of years and had proved a valuable member at all times. His election was an appreciation of his long and faithful service, Mr. Stubbs said.
A Melbourne cable announces the sudden death of Sidney B. Myer, governing director of Myer Emporium, aged 55. Myer, who was a Russian Jew, arrived in Melbourne 30 years ago a poor man, but died one of the wealthiest and most successful businessmen in Australia. His business capital, of which £3,000,000 employed 4000 persons, occupied a large space in the centre of the city.
The death occurred at To Puke yesterday of Renati Rangi Puarvhc Tc Koepa, premier chief of the Tuhourangi hapu. of the Arawa tribe arid grandson of Major Keepa, a noted leader during the Maori Wars. Deceased’s father, Keepa Tc Rangi Puawhc, was one of the leading chiefs of the Arawa tribe and for services to the Crown during the Maori Wars, was presented by Queen Victoria with a standard which is still preserved at Whakarcwarcwa.
At the Dominion conference o£ the Church of England Men ’a Society at Rotorua the following officers were elected for the year:—Vice-presidents, Archdeacon .T. AV. Russell (Oomaru) and Mr. F. tinell (AA'cllingtou); secretary, Mr. R. Biggins (Wellington); treasurer, Mr. J. AV. Henderson (AVellington); Dominion council, Revs. C. Long, G. C. Blethwayt, N. S. Barnett and Mr. 11. Robb (Wellington), Rev. A. .T. Beck and Mr. U. Day (Auckland), Mr. A. B. Why to (Hamilton), Air. AV. C. Collins (Christchurch). The president of the society is the Bishop of the Diocese in each district.
Lieut.-Gencral Sir A. J. Codlcy, G.C.8., and 'Lady Godloy will leave London for Hew Zealand by the Rangitiki on September 20, arriving in Auckland on October 24. Their stay on this occasion will’ be only' for two days, as they arc going on to Sydney by the Mamma, cn route for the Melbourne Centenary celebrations. A month or six weeks will be spent, in Australia, and when all engagements arc completed, Sir Alexander and Lady Godley will return to New Zealand, arriving about Christmas and staying till March 15. They arc looking forward intensely to revisiting many of their old haunts in the Dominion and seeing many of their old friends.
