Opening with the wind behind them in the early stages, St. Pat's had Kowhai in difficulties, and. the scoring wan opened when Hawley, the second fiveeighth, received the ball in a loose rush, that started at close range, and went over for a try. Edlin converted. Kowliai then worked tho rearguard w'Cll, but tho common fault was hanging on, and this cost them potential points several times. Despite this, Feilding dominated play for a. time, but. a loose pass among the backs again, lost them an opportunity. Brewer paved the wav for what should have been a certainty when he cut a clean passage through. Ibc defence, but his support, although accepting the transfer, hung on too long and was hauled over with another man waiting for his pass. .Schmidt intercepted a pass and broke away towards the Feilding line, but was overhauled. At the interval the score was: St. Pat ’s 5, Ivowhai 0. The second half was a procession, of wasted opportunities. Feilding, with the wind at their backs, and attacking for the most, part, missed openings repeatedly. Finally, with only a few- minutes remaining, Kitchen received the ball and danced his way over for a score by the posts. Some time previously he had discarded his boots as being a mere eneubbrance. He now removed tho sock from his left foot, and proceeded to convert in accomplished style. The game was drawn with five points to each team. Mr. A. Ward refereed. Little enterprise was chosen by either team. Bovin was the first, contributor, his score, coming when the first half was woJ.I advanced. The try was unconverted, and for tile rest of the spell neither team could press the alternating advantages to a conclusion.

After the change-over, Bice, who had. been once recalled for an infringement after going across, gained possession and finished by tho posts. Cockbura converted. Dynes broke away fast for pirates, but was unsupported aud rah into a cul-de-sac to be grassed. Ths final whistle was due when Evans made his way across for the last time ©n .Star’s behalf. Considerable surprise is being expressed at the non-inclusion of the All Black D. Afar, of Nelson, in tho Soddon. Shield team to meet Aiarlborough on Saturday. The selector, Mr E. Snow, says that tho present pack which is on tour has worked together so well that it is unwise to break the existing combination Max, when informed of the position, said ho appreciated the selector’sposition. The Nelson team had been together in a series of matches, and with ail members playing well, it would be hard for tho selector to drop any one of them. However, he would, keep fif, and .if in any eventuality he was required to fill a. vacancy, he would bo ready. Ashburton Beat xTelson Per Press Association. ASHBURTON, Sept. 4.
