MEETING OF MANAV/ATU UNION

The Manawatu Rugby Union meeting last evening was presided over by Mr A. W. Thompson, president. The Horowhenua Union advised that next Saturday was not suitable for the return representative game, and inquired when the Rowland cup junior contest was likely to eventuate. Horo-u,-hernia junior competition winners this year are Otaki club, and they will meet" Bunnytkorpe, Manawatu winners. September 15 is to be offered a s the dato for the match. From Ilawkc’s Bay Union came an invitation for members to attend the celebration of the jubilee oi Rugby in Ilawkc’s Bay on September 8.-—Mr I!. E. Hatch will represent Manawatu at the celebrations.

In acknowledging a further donation of ■£! Is 2d covering preliminary expenses in connection with the charity day football match, tho Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansfoyd) wrote stating that the cheque was altogether unexpected and thoroughly appreciated. The Relief Committee appreciated tho day being set aside for a charity match. The Mayor advised that the amount raised was £75 15s 2d, which was an excellent result. The money would be faithfully applied, as there were more calls being made on the relief depot to-day than at any previous time. St. Bat.’s Club extended an invitation to members of the union to its annual ball, when trophies won during the season are to be presented.—As the president (Mr Thompson) will be away from Palmerston North on the night of the bail, Mr K. W. Eglinton was asked to present the trophies on behalf of the union. From Woodvillc Club came a protest against United Club playing Wednesday junior players as Saturday third-

grade men. Mr Hatch (United representative) said he understood Wednesday juniors were eligible for Saturday third-grade game?. The chairman asked if there was any ruling on the minute books regarding the interchange of Wednesday and Saturday players, the secretary reporting that there was none. Mr Hickey said several clubs played Wednesday ’ men in Saturday and junior third-grade games. Woodvillo Club also sought information regarding another United player (Trepo) said to have been a Fcilding senior at one time. Mr Crawford said Trepo had never been more than a junior but had never been regraded. Mr Hatch said he was surprised to know the player had not been ragraded third grade. United Club thought he had been. In any case, Trepo had played against Woodvillc before, when Woodvillc won; there was no protest then. Mr L. J. Plank thought it poor sportsmanship. Mr Crawford: But that doesn’t alter the position that Trepo has not been regraded. The chairman pointed out that as a protest tho letter was out of order, as the necessary fee of 10s Gd did not accompany the protest. In any case, the playing of Wednesday players on Saturday was in order and the protest could not succeed. It was discovered at this stage that Trepo was not even a registered player, which led the chairman to suggest a replay of the game when United and Woodvillc meet in the “sudden death” competition, the match to be a ‘ doubleheader.’ ’ Mr C. Yates, however, thought the better way would be to make a more thorough perusal of the minutes of the union over the past six or seven years in an endeavour to discover if Trepo had been regraded as the United Club claimed. This found approval from the meeting. Mr Crawford complained about tho decision of tho union at its last meeting to put- off -the “sudden death” games next Saturday had the representative game with Horowhenua eventuated. I.ast year when Kia Toa desired a postponement of competition games because some of its men were away with the representatives, it had been turned down, the union srating that the competition games must go on. Why the different policy this season? he asked. The chairman said the union desired that the games should go on at ~]! times, but a special circumstance had arisen on this occasion. Fixtures for Saturday Seniors.—Old Boys v. St. Bnt.’s, oval, Showgrounds, 5 p.m.; Fcilding Old Boys v. Fcilding, No. 1 Johnston Park, 3 p.m. Juniors—Old Boys v.
