Australia v. An English Eleven
WICKET SATURATED AS RESULT OP RAIN. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. ' LONDON, September 3. Owing to the wicket being saturated as a result of yesterday’s rain, there was no play before lunch to-day in the match between Australia and an Eleven of England. The match commenced at 3 o’clock. The wicket was easy after the rain, consequently Chapman on winning the toss, elected, to hat. Hobbs and Walters, by delightful play, raised 52 in 40 minutes, when Fleetwood-Smith, who more than once troubled Walters, bowled him. The same bowler continued to trouble both Hobbs and Woolley. The former was put out in attempting to drive a good length ball, after batting 110 minutes, the score being two wickets for 111. Woolley found form and notched 50 in 70 minutes, after which he and Hammond raised 150 in 140 minutes. Woolley was then clean howled after batting 95 minutes and hitting nine fours. With the score, 3 for 150 Hammond and Ames continued steadily until stumps were drawn. Assisted by a heavy morning sea mist when tho game resumed to-day, the bowlers proved dangerous immediately upon the resumption, the ball often rising awkwardly. Amos hooked O’Reilly for four but was out in FleetwoodSmith’s second over. Fleetwood-Smith troubled Hammond and after 200 was on the board, he reached forward and was smartly stumped. Fleetwood-Smith thus claimed Hammond’s wicket at each of the two meetings of the tour. He gave a delightful display for 75 minutes and hit 10 fours. The batsmen were now hopelessly at sea. Valentine was caught off O’Reilly in the next over. Tennyson played a remarkable stroke before being caught at long leg, giving O’Reilly two wickets in three overs. Allom hit viciously, one going clean out of the ground. His 47 not out were made in 40 minutes and included three sixers and four fours. Nobody else looked like staying. Chapman strained, a leg and employed Khan as runner. O’Reilly was in excellent form and took four wickets for 25. ENGLAND. First Innings.
