Feilding Primary Schools

MEETINGS OE COMMITTEES Mr. J. Penney (chairman) presided over a meeting of the Lylton Street School Committee on Monday night when there wero also present Messrs T. Donaldson, G. F. Loney, E. Heald, C. V, Jewell and C. A. Batt (headmaster) and Mrs. Green. The headmaster reported that the roll for August was 286 with an average attendance of 266.5. Arbor day was observed on August 16, the children being addressed by tho Mayor (Mr. C. E. Taylor) and Messrs J. S. Tingey ("Wanganui Education Board) and G. J. I'itzpatriclc (chairman Manchester Street School Committee). Trees were presented to the school by Messrs Tingey, Saunders and P. Mason. During the month tho school was visited by Messrs McMurtrie and Merrington (inspectors). Eight new' pupils wero enrolled at the commencement of tho new term. Advice was received from the Borough Council that Telicf labour could not bo used on school property unless the work was of a developmental nature and in future applications for the use of relief labour would first,require the approval of the Unemployment Board. Kcferriug to tho visit of tho inspectors, Mr. Batt stated that tho report could bo considered a satisfactory one. Discussing tho matter of relief labour being used on tho school grounds, it was stated that all tho work done had been in strict accordance with the board’s regulations and it was agreed to interview the local certifying officer to see what could be done to meet tho situation. Mr. Balt announced that it was proposed to hold school concerts with tho object of raising funds to meet incidental requirements. Tho committee expressed its approval of tho idea. Tho committee acknowledged with thanks tho receipt of £37 6s Sd. from the "Wanganui Education Board for incidental allowances. MANCHESTER STREET SCHOOL At tho monthly meeting of the Manchester Street, School Committee on Monday evening the following were present:—Messrs G. J. .Fitzpatrick (chairman), J. Campbell, J. "Whibley, T. J£. Hay, G. Watts, W. Oliver and Mcsdames P. G. Guy and IT. Ross. The headmaster (Mr. Whibley) reported that 1-1 new pupils wero admitted that morning and the present roll was 335. Tho last term, opened with a splendid attendance; ouo or two were stilt absent on accouut of mumps "but he felt suro now the wanner weather had come they would have very few fresh cases. .A. letter from the Wanganui Education Board had stated that tho first, term attendance) results would bo excluded, duo to epidemics of measles and mumps, and the headmaster felt certain that the middlo term would be treated in a similar way as about 30 per cent, of the roll number were affected.

Tho inspectors’ report was before the committee and this stated the general efficiency and the order and discipline wero very good.—Tho committee congratulated the headmaster and staff on the splendid report, Tho borough engineer forwarded a copy of a circular front Uio Unemployment Board stating that relief workers would not bo availablo for work on school properties unless such work was of a developmental nature. —Left with tho chairman and Air. Hay. 'The Ma.nawatu and Oroua School Committees’ Association .forwarded a copy of a. letter from the' Minister ol' Education which stated that additional grants were being made for school committees. The secretary also notified the committco that, tho quarterly meeting of the association would bo held next week.—The chairman is to attend.
