Activity on the Clyde

NEW TONNAGE LAUNCHED. United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, Sept. 1. Among the gratifying indications of improving British trade is the increasing activity of shipbuilding on the Clyde. According to the Financial News the shipping tonnage launched on the Clydo during August was the best on record for the past four years. With four mouths still to go, the output for 1934 lias already exceeded the production of the whole of 1933. To date thirty-six vessels aggregating 61,786 tons have been launched this year, as compared with 1933, the aggregate of which was 55,869. It is more than likely that tho improvement will be continued for some time.

There is a good number of mercantile and naval ships at present on the stocks and due to be launched in the course of the next few months in addition to the new Cunarder, which will enter the water September 26. Wlien the tonnage of the Cunarder is added, the aggregate output of the year will materially exceed the 140,000 mark, exceeding any year since 1930, when 246 vessels aggregating 529,744 tons were launched. Impressive Figures REMARKABLE INCREASE (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Sept. 1. .Following reports that shipbuilding on the Tyne shows a 400 per cent, improvement over last year, statistics of tho Clyde shipyards showing an August output of 11 vessels of 33,211 tons were the highest for any month since October, 1930. The trade output for the first six months of 1934 was 36 vessels of G7,7SG tons, already exceeding the 1933 total by 12,000 tons. The new 73,000-ton Cunard-Whito Star liner is also under construction, and in each month since last August more tonnago has been ordered than launched. At Go van, where last year construction was at a standstill, 5000 men are now working and the improvement is general throughout the district.
