Public Works Branch Transfers From Shannon

TWO-FLOOR STRUCTURE TO BE pRECTED AT PALMERSTON N. The transfer, recently decided upon, of the Public Works Department's branch offices from Shannon to Palmerston North, which will bo carried ou-t in the near future, entails the erection in the city of a generouslyproportioned twufloor structure to accommodate tho stores and equipment. Tenders for the construction work close shortly with -the department’s tenders board in Wellington, and an early commencement of operations is anticipated. Situated in Cook street, in front, of the old gasometer, the building will have a thirty yards frontage and considerable depth. On the ground floor will be storeroom, test-room, meterroom, etc., while the first floor is designed for housing the district civil engineer, the district electrical engineer, storekeeper, overseer, draughtsman and main office. A commodious draughting room will be included. The erection will be in reinforced concrete throughout, with steel’ trusses supporting the roof. Central water heating will service the building, while excellent provision has been made, particularly in the top storey, for window ventilation. The transfer of officers that will take place when the new premises are completed will mean quite an exodus from the present location.
